Theological Colleges

The EKHC has one degree, four diploma and one certificate granting theological institutions.  Most of these institutions are located out of Addis Ababa.  The colleges have been producing high-level leaders, pastors and ministers.

At present the Church has  255 Bible schools teaching in Amharic.  These are spread all over the country, with marked concentration in the South and South-Western regions. Over 60,000 students have graduated from these schools since the opening of the first school by SIM in Wolaita.  Currently, there are more than 600 full-time teachers and 5,000 students.

 BTCP/BTCL

Bible Training Centers for Pastors (BTCP) and Leaders (BTCL) provide a source of continuing education and training.  Participants attend informal classes, conducted in English.  This means that they must have completed at least 12th Grade education to benefit from the classes.  An Amharic version of this program is planned.

It takes an average of 2 years to complete the material, which is divided into 10 courses.

  • Bible Study Methods and Rules of Interpretation
  • New Testament Survey
  • Old Testament Survey
  • Church History Survey
  • Preaching
  • Bible Doctrine Survey
  • Personal Spiritual Life
  • Church Ministry, Administration and Education
  • Teaching Principles and Methods
  • Missions, Evangelism and Discipleship

There are currently 334 students studying in this program, and 189 have already graduated.

Study materials including NIV Study Bibles are provided by donors, and the teachers give their time free of charge.

TEE

The Theological Education by Extension program is aimed at training people who are not able to study the Bible as regular students.   It is conducted in Amharic, although there are plans to start a version of the program in English.

The TEE program runs in 25 districts, and about 2,500 people are enrolled in it. Students study the course materials in their own time, meeting in groups of about 10 people to discuss each week's lessons. Each course is assessed by an examination, administered and marked by district leaders.

Students can take a Diploma program, which lasts an average of 4 years, or a certificate program, which lasts an average of 3 years.  There are a range of courses in Biblical Studies, Ministry, Theology, Church History and Doctrine.  The Diploma consists of 26 courses, so it requires considerable discipline to complete them all.

Local church leaders can help by encouraging their students, subsidizing the cost of the materials, and recognizing the value of this kind of training, which has proved to be of great worth at times in the past when Bible Schools were forced to close.
