Awareness Creation & Prevention of Harmful Traditional Practices

The harmful traditional practices prevention project is focusing on the Southern region.

The project is aiming to build up awareness of the harmful effects of traditional practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and thereby to achieve behavioral change.  This is done by conducting awareness creation workshops, and training trainers from different communities and faiths to work on the prevention and eradication of these practices.  Change Agents visit families and help them to decide not to follow harmful traditional practices.

The project has already seen signs of new patterns of behaviour emerging, with girls organizing in groups to support each other in their decision not to follow the traditional practice, and some young couples marrying without the women undergoing any kind of FGM.

Future Plans

-Start up small enterprise for circumcisers

-Campaign on harmful traditional practices

-Training for local leaders and change agents on harmful traditional practices
