The KHC
conducts its own surveys to find out whether relief
assistance is required, following the government appeal and
sometimes a head of the appeal. These surveys typically look
at the nutritional state of children in the affected areas.
If a need for
relief assistance is identified, donor organizations are
contacted and asked for help.
|
|
Role of the department in the current
drought-affected areas (2003)
- Following a nutritional
survey, the KHC is concentrating on 5 districts; 2 in
Oromia and 3 in the Southern Nations.
- The districts in the South
were found to be worst affected, and are being helped with
Supplementary Feeding for the malnourished children, and
Seed Distribution.
- Additional resources are
being directed to this, over and above the original
allocation of food per child, as the rations intended for
the affected children are inevitably shared with family
members.
- In Shashemene district,
dry rations are also being provided for 13,750 people.
- The districts in Oromia
are being helped with Seed Distribution

Rehabilitation
|
 |
|
Farmers are provided
with seeds, oxen and other essentials to help them
rebuild for the future. Rehabilitation of the land
is achieved through soil and water conservation
projects, and planting of forestry and fruit trees. |
|
|
|
The KHC also raises and
distributes highland fruit & agro forestry tree seedlings (apple,
pear, plum. mango) and gives training on how to raise
them. The Government is
using KHC as a model and a source of training throughout the
highland regions, on the growing of highland fruit trees.
